Expedition: Dragonite, the Pokémon card to chase

In the Expedition set, the Pokémon card Dragonite sits ahead of Mew, Mewtwo and Charizard in the price ranking. Here are those holos and the set's three Charizards.

Expedition opens the e-Card series, and the card collectors chase in it is Dragonite, a holo numbered 9. Its price is that of a single card, without the set around it, and it dwarfs the rest of the set. The four cards in the ranking below are all holos: their artwork shines, unlike the plain rares of the set, which sell for far less.

Expedition Base Set: Dragonite ahead of Mew, Mewtwo and Charizard

Four Expedition holos, in dollars

Dragonite$949.79
Mew$525.00
Mewtwo$409.05
Charizard$287.50
US prices, card by card.

Mew comes second at $525.00, ahead of Mewtwo at $409.05 and Charizard at $287.50. Dragonite is at $949.79. The ranking does not follow the fame of the Pokémon: Charizard closes the list, and an evolution dominates it. For an old card, what weighs is collector demand for that exact card, not the celebrity of its name.

Expedition Base Set: a Charizard's number changes its price

The three Expedition Charizards, in dollars

Charizard holo
$287.50
Charizard rare, lower number
$198.32
Charizard rare, higher number
$149.19
Three cards with one name, three prices.

The set holds three Charizards. The holo is at $287.50, the rare number 39 at $198.32 and the rare number 40 at $149.19. The two rares are plain cards, and their price stays under the holo's. A buyer who searches for Charizard in this set meets all three under one name, so the number is the only sure way to know which one a listing sells. The name is the same on all three cards: only the number printed at the bottom tells them apart, and it is the number each card page follows.
